One study of 22 cases of C. freundii showed 100% resistance to erythromycin, ampicillin, and methicillin. As was demonstrated in our case study, macrolides including erythromycin and roxithyromycin (often indicated for gram positive/negative cocci infections) were ineffective treatments for C. braakii, a gram-negative bacillus. While oral amoxicillin and pivoxyl sulbactam were prescribed after incision and drainage (I&D) in our study, the Citrobacter isolate was resistant to amoxicillin. Therefore, the I&D procedure was primarily responsible for patient improvement. To our knowledge, this is the first reported case of C. braakii-induced periungual abscess in a patient with chronic paronychia. Additional data on Citrobacter infections are needed to improve comprehension of risk factors, etiology, clinical features, and management of these infections. REFERENCES

Managing knee ostheoarthritis: efficacy of hyaluronic acid injections.
Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common form of chronic arthritis worldwide. The etiology of pain in osteoarthritis is multifactoral, and includes mechanical and inflammatory processes. The use of intra-articular viscosupplementation in the nonoperative management of patients with osteoarthritis has become quite popular. Recent clinical data have demonstrated that the anti-inflammatory and chond...
متن کاملIntra-articular therapy in osteoarthritis.
The medical literature was reviewed from 1968-2002 using Medline and the key words "intra-articular" and "osteoarthritis" to determine the various intra-articular therapies used in the treatment of osteoarthritis. Corticosteroids and hyaluronic acid are the most frequently used intra-articular therapies in osteoarthritis. Other intra-articular substances such as orgotein, radiation synovectomy,...
متن کاملComparison of intra-articular injections of Hyaluronic Acid and Corticosteroid in the treatment of Osteoarthritis of the hip in comparison with intra-articular injections of Bupivacaine. Design of a prospective, randomized, controlled study with blinding of the patients and outcome assessors
BACKGROUND Although intra-articular hyaluronic acid is well established as a treatment for osteoarthritis of the knee, its use in hip osteoarthritis is not based on large randomized controlled trials. There is a need for more rigorously designed studies on hip osteoarthritis treatment as this subject is still very much under debate. METHODS/DESIGN Randomized, controlled trial with a three-arm...
متن کاملIntra-articular hyaluronic acid for the treatment of osteoarthritis of the knee: systematic review and meta-analysis.
BACKGROUND Osteoarthritis of the knee affects up to 10% of the elderly population. The condition is frequently treated by intra-articular injection of hyaluronic acid. We performed a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials to assess the effectiveness of this treatment. METHODS We searched MEDLINE, EMBASE, CINAHL, BIOSIS and the Cochrane Controlled Trial Register fr...
